Last fall, I was forced to pay the highway robbery price of $25 for two very flimsy wire shelves for my middle schooler’s locker. I could find no alternatives to this locker shelving that did not cost $50 or more. I didn’t want to spend $50. And, I didn’t realize that I would be out a minimum of $50 by the end of year if I bought wire locker shelves.
The lockers at my kid’s school have one top shelf that is unreachable for anyone 5′6″, a major inconvenience for roughly 80% of 7th graders. The lockers are so narrow that storing books in a backpack that hangs on a hook is not an option because the standard backpack doesn’t fit into the locker without a lot of cramming and brute force. And once a back pack is wedged into the locker, it’s not retrievable without a whole lot of leverage (or a truck and a winch).
So, I’ve learned that wire locker shelves are not built to last. No, they are built to be replaced at least twice a year. After 2 semesters, the legs of the shelves are bent and the shelves are no longer stable, contributing to (if not enhancing) my middle schooler’s already finely-tuned disorganization skills.
A Better Locker Shelf for $20
I just found locker shelves that look like they will hold up for at least a year, and for the price of $20, I can live with that. The shelf is
made of rigid plastic, so the legs should hold up better under the weight of books. The top shelf has a small drawer, which may come in handy. I just ordered It’s Academic Adjustable Double Locker Shelf
