Haiti experienced another earthquake this morning, making relief efforts even more difficult to implement than was already the case. If you are one of the 1-in-10 Americans who are out of work, you may want to donate money to charities to help Haiti, but right now, that’s just not possible. However, you may still be able to give creatively, though baked goods, rummage sale items, produce from your garden, or with other non-cash donations, and The Common Room blog has ideas for helping Haiti when you have no money.
Remember you are entitled to a tax deduction for the charitable donation. Travel expenses, whether the cost of a flight to Haiti or the miles you put on your personal vehicle to participate in donating goods, are tax deductible just as the value of you donations are. Use tax deduction tracking software throughout the year to record donations and to get fair market value for your donations. All of the software listed at that link is low-cost, and there’s even a decent free option. And, if you are blessed with a few dollars to donate to Haitian relief or anothere charity, find out how to select a good charity that uses donations honestly.
