Discover Card Terms Changes

in Money Management

I just read over the latest change in terms for my Discover card, which includes a new due date. The new day of the month my Discover payment will be due on will be revealed on my May statement. Why doesn’t Discover just tell me my new due date will be on the X of each month starting in May so I can be prepared in May? Is that too much to ask?

I have paid my credit cards off every month for the last 20 years, so if I miss paying Discover on time, they’ll nail me with a late fee despite my payment record. Yeah, I know: that’s how they money off of people who use credit responsibly.

I’m making a note to myself to watch for the new payment date for my Discover account, 3 months from now.

Just want through the same routine with Discover. Their very lame attempt to explain why the date change was that they went from a 30 day cycle to a 25 day cycle to save the customer a few dollars each month. No sense it yelling at the poor rep on the phone but I did tell her that most customers will quickly see that the financial gain in this change is going to be Discover Card not the customers.

I also informed her that if this happened again in the future the account would be closed the next day.

It always takes me aback at just how dumb they think most people are….

Dave,
I agree that the warning about the change to the due date was not communicated well. I pay my Discover card bill online, and I download transactions into my personal finance software. As long as the transactions downloaded match up to my receipts – which they always do – I don’t even look at my online statement any more. It was just a fluke that I happened to look over my statement back in February and I saw the message about the new payment date coming up for Discover.

While it is my responsibility to keep track of my Discover account, I am doing that, albeit electronically. In my case, I think Discover should have sent out a special announcement via email to customers who do not get statements in the mail. In your case, Dave, I think Discover definitely should have made the announcement more obvious and it should have appeared on the first page of the statement.

After having the same due date for 10 years I got no fair warning from discover card, I didn’t find out until I went to make a payment online. It was due on the 10th they moved it to the 6th I was already 2 days late. They charged me $39 late fee and raised my APR from 13% to 21.24% my heart went up so high my mouth and arms went numb I called and was told I was warned on my last 2 statements. I got my past 2 statements with discover on the phone and looked and still couldn’t find a warning, I finally found it at the bottom in small print *Attention*. That was the warning. Even with her on the phone directing me it took me a while to find it. Fraud!!!!

I noticed this today on two accounts we have. I would bet they are changing from a fixed payment due date, to a different due date each statement. This would end up with more people accidentally missing the payment date (they were used to).

Shelley,

We’re sorry for the inconvenience. To answer your question, we weren’t able to disclose your specific due date in a mass communication since due dates vary between cardmembers. In your May statement we’ll provide you with the specific new due date for your next payment. Once your payment due date changes in May your welcomed to change your payment due date again through Discover.com. Just login to your account and you’ll find the option within ‘My Profile’. If you have any questions please call us at 1-800-Discover.

Thanks
